To say I had ear infections when I was little would be a huge understatement. My ear infections were so severe and chronic that I was deaf for part of my childhood. I could not hear when I was in kindergarten and would instead read lips.
My parents discovered this one day, leading to accelerated amounts of antibiotics and eventually surgery to have tubes placed in my ears. I remember it all. The pain, the taste of the antibiotic because I could not swallow them (my parents put them in marshmallows), the ear drops, and finally the surgery. As the process is designed, the tubes fell out as I got older and I remember that as well.
I did not have ear pain again until I started working at a pool, but the memory of that pain scared me.
It was not until I saw a doctor in South Korea that I learned the extent of the damage my chronic ear infections had on my eardrums. Using a video scope, my doctor showed me my eardrums. Unlike my children’s eardrums, mine is graced with crescent moon scar tissue. The doctor said it was from the severe ear infections I suffered from as a child. I think the tube surgery also played a part.
I wish my parents had known about this amazing trick when I was a child, and I am glad I know about it now. If my kids ever have ear pain, I will use this right away. I do not want them to suffer like I did.
Salt Sock Remedy
What is Needed:
- Cotton Sock
- 1 ½ Cup of Sea Salt
Directions:
1. Pour the sea salt into the sock and tie it closed.
2. Warm a skillet on the stove over medium heat.
3. Place the sock in the pan and heat it up for 4 to 6 minutes. Shake it around a bit so it heats evenly.
4. The sock is done when it is warm to the touch.
5. Place the warm sock on the ear.
It works for adults and children alike. Just be careful when applying it to the ear of a child. Make sure it isn’t too hot.
The heat of the salt sock relieves pain, and the sea salt will help to draw out toxins and heal the infection. Warm sea salt is also an antiseptic and will remove moisture from the ear.
The salt sock can be used many times until it discolors. When it discolors, it should be replaced.
Putting a cup or two of sea salt in a sock, warming it up on the stove, and placing it over your ear may be just the thing your body needs to feel better. It is cheap, all natural, and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Many people have found soothing comfort and relief with this simple remedy and if you ever have an ear ache or pains, give it a try and see if it works.
