Want to learn a lot about people with just one simple question? Ask them what their favorite color is!
Most Americans prefer blue, according to House Beautiful’s 2012 Color Report. Green holds the second spot.
“Blue and green are cool hues that imbue our living spaces with serenity. Our homes are our havens, and we’re not surprised that the two most popular colors are restful and reassuring,” says House Beautiful Editor-in-Chief Newell Turner.
Blue is associated with harmony, reliability and sensitivity. People who prefer this color like to keep things clean and tidy, according to Bernardo Tirado writing for Psychology Today.
Tirado writes that green is associated with affection, loyalty and frankness. People who prefer this color see their reputation as very important.
Things get spicy when we arrive at red – if you prefer this color, you are likely bold and sexually charged.
Men really do prefer a lady in red, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Interestingly enough, studies have also found that women are more likely to wear red when they’ve reached their peak fertility.
Like orange? The good news is that you’re likely friendly, easygoing and flamboyant. The bad news? If your favorite color is orange, studies show you’re less likely to get married and if you do, your marriage will be one of “light affection.”
If you prefer the color purple, you’re likely a hippy of sorts, utopian ideals and all. People who like this color tend to enjoy mysticism.
If your favorite color is gray, don’t date someone who likes orange!
While light affection plagues orange-lovers, people who prefer grey are haunted by a fear of commitment. And it’s not hard to see why; gray is an emotionless, detached and ambiguous color. People who like it are likely the people who will say “Oh yeah, I like a bit of everything…” when you ask what their favorite music genre is.
You know that stereotype about people who love pink? It’s partly true.
People who like this oh-so-divisive color tend to be naive and sheltered. It’s a slightly vain color that tends to be preferred by women in the upper-middle class.
If you like black, you’re a very sophisticated, complicated realist with a need for control. You’re more likely to be pessimistic and cynical. Interestingly enough, wearing black has been found to make you seem more attractive and intelligent – but too much can make you intimidating.
White has historically been associated with purity and cleanliness.
People who prefer this hue are usually meticulous and overwhelmingly clean – after all, how else would they be able to keep those whites from turning into off-whites?
If you like brown, you’re likely simple and comfortable. You don’t feel the need for extravagance or complications. You’re also likely frugal and direct.
People who like yellow are often happy idealists. And perhaps, fittingly, there aren’t very many people who prefer this color over any other one.
What’s your favorite color? Does the description of it here describe you?
