For thousands of years, natural health experts have been using acupressure and acupuncture to cure a number of physical ailments.

Today, we know the process works due to the release of endorphins when certain body parts are stimulated. This can have profound effects – including pain relief.

But acupuncture and acupressure don’t just treat physical ailments.

No, studies have found them to be effective at treating mental health conditions as well. In some trials, the procedures worked better than pharmaceuticals like Prozac.

In this article, we’re going to focus on how acupressure and acupuncture can help with two of the most common mental health conditions in the United States – insomnia and anxiety.

Key Points

As far as acupressure and acupuncture are concerned, points are key.

Luckily, thanks to the extensive research that has gone into the practices, we’ve got plenty of information regarding which point heals what.

If you’ve got anxiety or insomnia, you’ll want to focus on the Heart 7 and Pericardium 6 points.

Now, unless you’re a trained acupuncturist in a sterile setting, do not use needles. The pressure-based procedures we’ll explore below are safe for home use.

Heart 7

Traditionally, this point is called Shenmen – ‘Spirit Gate’ in Chinese.

This is one of the key acupressure and acupuncture points for mental ailments like anxiety and insomnia.

According to Acupuncture.com, stimulation of this point helps energy get along the body’s meridians. This, in turn, allows for proper functioning of the internal organs. How does this help with mental illness? Well, you see, many experts consider mental illness to be a symptom of organ distress within the body.

To use the Heart 7 point, take your thumb and press it against the point (pictured above) on your opposite hand. Hold this for about one minute to prepare your body for sleep or reduce anxiety.

Pericardium 6

Experts traditionally refer to the Pericardium 6 point as Neiguan, which means ‘Inner Gate’ in – yup, you guessed it – Chinese.

This point is effective at treating the irritability caused by anxiety as well as insomnia.

Some refer to Pericardium 6 as ‘the most effective acupuncture point’ of all.

To use it, press the point (indicated above) firmly for one minute if you notice yourself struggling to get to sleep or feeling antsy.
