China has a tradition of woodcarving that is centuries old. There has been a revival of this art form and Zheng Chunhui has taken it to a new level.
Take a look at his piece, “Along The River During The Qingming Festival.”
This wooden sculpture is carved from a 12-foot tree. Chunhui has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest wood carving ever produced.
The sculpture contains over 550 individually carved people, many different buildings, and foliage.
This piece is a replica of the famous Chinese painting “Along The River During The Qingming Festival,” attributed to the Song Dynasty era artist Zhang Zeduan sometime between 1085 and 1145.
It is common for Chinese artists to reinterpret older art pieces.
Chunhui’s piece really brings the scene to life. It is almost like one alive for the festival.
The piece took Chunhui four years to complete. The Qingming Festival refers to a springtime festival on the 15th day of the spring equinox.
