Moles are common growths on the skin that are usually brown or black in color. They can appear anywhere on the skin, either alone or in groups. Most appear in early childhood, and they can grow or change in color. Moles occur when the cells in the skin grow in a cluster, instead of being spread throughout the skin. These cells, called melanocytes, make the pigment that gives skin its natural color.
Most moles are harmless. If a mole on your body has the following traits, it’s most likely nothing to worry about:
- One color – often brown, but a mole can be tan, black, red, pink, blue, skin-toned or colorless
- Round in shape
- Flat or slightly raised
- Looks the same from month to month
A mole or a new spot on the skin that may be a sign of melanoma will most likely have one of the ABCDEs of melanoma, and should be seen by a health care professional immediately. Symptoms include:
- Asymmetry – One half is unlike the other half
- Border – An irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border
- Color – Varied from one area to another, has shades of different colors
- Diameter – Generally bigger than 6mm
- Evolving – Looks different, is changing in size, shape or color
If you are concerned about melanoma, it’s best to visit a health care professional. If your moles are simply a source of insecurity, there are several natural ways to treat them.
Try one of the home remedies below to help lessen the color, size and appearance of your moles.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Applying raw, organic apple cider vinegar to a mole every day can help to remove it by scabbing over the mole and allowing it to fall off over time. Tap a cotton ball or paper towel soaked with apple cider vinegar to your face (or any other area) and let the apple cider vinegar remain on the skin overnight. You might want to apply some coconut oil to the skin around the mole for protection.

2. Pineapple and Sea Salt
The natural citric acid in pineapple helps to dissolve moles, while the sea salt helps to shed the dried layer of skin to reveal smoother, clearer skin underneath.
3. Sour Apple Juice
Moles can be removed with the help of acids, such as the citric acid found in sour fruits like green apples, oranges and lemons. These fruit juices can be applied over moles for 1-2 weeks.
4. Honey
Apply raw, organic honey over the mole regularly like a cream to see positive results without any harmful side effects.
5. Castor Oil and Baking Soda
Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of castor oil to make a paste. Apply the mixture on the mole and leave it on overnight. There are several varieties to this method, with castor oil as a main ingredient.
6. Garlic
Apply a garlic paste on your moles or scarred skin and cover it with a bandage. Allow it to dry overnight and continue the process for five days.
7. Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera won’t show immediate results, but it will help to heal sensitive and delicate skin. Apply fresh Aloe Vera gel onto the mole and cover it, leaving it on overnight.
8. Flaxseed Oil
Create a paste using flaxseed oil and honey. Put the paste on the mole and leave it on for at least 30 minutes.
